Reliable drinking water testing – for your health

Water testing for private and business customers.

Why test your water?

The most common parameters tested:

  • High iron and manganese content
  • Excessive water hardness
  • Microbiological contamination
  • Hydrogen sulfide and chlorine
  • Nitrogen compounds
Water is an essential part of our daily lives, but even seemingly clean drinking water can contain invisible (odorless, tasteless, colorless) impurities that may affect both your health and the reliability of household appliances.

Testing your drinking water is necessary if you notice changes in your health, or in the odor, taste or color of the water. Regular water testing helps detect possible problems early and prevent greater damage.

Several factors affect well water quality – the soil, the weather and human activity nearby. Because private water supplies are not under continuous supervision, the risk of bacterial contamination (bacteria in drinking water) is considerably higher, so regular well water testing is the best way to protect your family’s health and the safety of your drinking water.

Even city water (tap water from the municipal supply) is not always problem-free. It may contain compounds that affect the aesthetic qualities of the water and damage pipes and household appliances.

Routine water testing at Veelabor helps confirm that your water is safe, identify possible deviations and assess whether your home or business needs a water treatment system.

Veelabor is equipped with modern technology, and our experienced specialists know which water tests to run and how to interpret the results.

Drinking water tests – packages by water source

Choose your water source

Under Regulation No. 61 of the Minister of Social Affairs, the drinking water handler must ensure proper quality up to the point where the drinking water becomes available to another handler or to the consumer. You can check the quality of your drinking water in the public database.

The home tap water package is meant for testing the water when:

  • the drinking water handler has had non-compliances (you can check this in the public database);
  • the plumbing is old and poorly maintained;
  • the home has been unoccupied for a long time and the water has been standing in the pipes;
  • the water quality has changed;
  • the household includes children, older people or people with weakened immune systems.

You can also order a certified specialist to take the water samples for you.

A dug well (also called a shaft well) is built into water layers close to the surface, so well water is vulnerable to both chemical and microbiological contamination.

Test your dug well water at least once a year. The best time is after the spring flood.

Also test your dug well water if:

  • there are sewage structures (e.g. a septic tank or holding tank), barns or fields near the well
  • the well has not been cleaned for a long time
  • the well has not been used for a long time (the water has been standing)
  • surface water has entered the well
  • small animals have accidentally fallen into the well

You can also order a certified specialist to take the water samples for you.

A drilled well is a pipe drilled or mechanically pressed into the ground to draw drinking water. It is usually closed and better protected from outside factors than a dug well.

Test your drilled well water at least every couple of years.

The drilled well package is meant for testing the water when:

  • the well has not been used for a long time and the water has been standing;
  • the odor, taste or color of the water has changed;
  • the water quality may change with the season;

    Water sampling guide for chemical parameters

    1. Use a clean plastic or glass bottle with smooth walls that holds at least 1 liter. Avoid soft drink bottles if possible.
    2. Label the bottle with the sampling location (drilled well, dug well, tap water supply), your contact details and the sampling time.
    3. Open the tap and let the water run for 5 minutes.
    4. Rinse the bottle and its cap 2–3 times under running water.
    5. Do not change the flow rate while sampling.
    6. When filling the bottle, do not let it touch the tap (risk of contamination).
    7. Fill the bottle to the brim and make sure no air bubbles remain on the walls or under the cap.
    8. If possible, keep the sample cool (for example in a refrigerator) and dark.
    9. Deliver the sample to Miridon’s Tartu or Tallinn office as soon as possible.

    Watch the video below (in Estonian) to see in detail how to take a water sample from the tap.

    Note: Microbiological testing requires a sterile container. You can get bottles from our Tartu or Tallinn office.

    1. If possible, remove the strainer and any other attachments from the end of the tap.
    2. Open the tap and wash your hands thoroughly.
    3. Let cold water run at full flow for 3–5 minutes.
    4. Sterilize the tap with a disinfectant or a flame.
    5. Open the tap at full flow for 5–10 seconds, then reduce it to half flow.
    6. Open the sterile bottle and avoid contaminating the cap.
    7. Leave 2 cm of air space in the bottle. Close the bottle immediately after filling.
    8. Write down the time the sample was taken.
    9. Bring water samples to our office within 12 hours of sampling at the latest.
    10. If necessary, store the sample in a refrigerator and consult our specialists.

    Who can order water tests from Veelabor?

    Both private individuals and companies can order tests from Veelabor.

    Where can I get the sampling containers?

    Before testing your water, contact the laboratory to confirm which parameters you need tested. Sampling containers are issued according to the parameters being tested. You can pick up suitable containers at our Tartu and Tallinn offices Mon–Fri 9:00 AM–5:00 PM.

    How do I take a water sample?

    Before sampling, read the sampling guides and videos.

    What happens next, once I have the sample?

    Once the sample is taken, bring it to our Tartu or Tallinn office as soon as possible. The laboratory staff will tell you if the sampling time or the container is unsuitable.

    Which tests should I order?

    The parameters to test depend on the purpose (for example, caterers need the parameters of the drinking water monitoring plan).

    If your drinking water has a specific problem or concern, contact our laboratory. If needed, we will advise you and work out which parameters to test.

    How much water do I need to bring?

    The amount depends on the parameters being tested – generally 1 liter is enough for chemical parameters and 0.5 liter for microbiological parameters (a sterile container is required).

    Where can I bring the samples?

    You can bring samples to our Tartu or Tallinn office. In Tartu, we receive samples Mon–Fri 9:00 AM–4:00 PM. In Tallinn, we receive samples Mon–Thu 9:00 AM–4:00 PM.

    How do I receive my water test results?

    We send the results to the email address given on the submission form. If needed, we can also mail the report, or you can collect it from our office.

    How quickly will I get the results?

    Turnaround depends mainly on the parameters tested. Chemical results are usually ready within one day, microbiological results within two to three days.

    Can I get help interpreting the results?

    We issue the report together with the limit values set for drinking water. The report itself does not interpret the results, but you can consult a laboratory specialist if needed.

    How do I pay the invoice?

    You can pay for the tests on site or by bank transfer (we send the invoice to the email address given on the submission form).

    Do you offer a sampling service?

    Yes, we offer a certified water sampler service all over Estonia.
